Wi-LAN's Wireless Modems

Wi-LAN's competitively priced "Hopper" wireless modems set the standard for remote multi-site data management. They can be used anywhere to replace or extend standard wire lines, and in many places where wires are unavailable, impractical, or too costly. They have proven their value in a wide range of commercial, industrial and municipal applications. In fact, wherever efficient, reliable and secure data acquisition, control or transmission is essential, "Hopper" modems are the solution of choice.

"Hopper" modems operate in licence-exempt ISM radio bands. Users do not have to deal with licencing fees or monthly data line charges. All Hopper modems employ direct sequence spread spectrum technology to ensure optimum effective throughput. The "Hopper FD" is the industry's only wireless modem to offer both direct sequence and frequency hopping transmission technologies. Hopper FD users benefit from the consistent high performance of direct sequence in most environments, while having the option of switching to frequency hopping in certain high interference situations.

The flow control feature ensures that all transmissions are received even if they are sent using different data rates or in unusually high volumes. And you can take advantage of four different repeater configurations to further enhance the flexibility and performance of your network.

Performance and Reliability

Hopper modems employ a variety of engineering features that reinforce the reliability and performance of your data communications network. You can check your network's performance quickly and conveniently by using the built-in feedback test to monitor each remote unit from your central station. Brownout allows automatic recovery from power fluctuations while the built-in watchdog feature overcomes lock-up problems that may occur (a real possibility in any digital system). Our error control option further enhances reliability by making your modem re-send data packets until their receipt is acknowledged.

Security

Preserving the security of communications is a critical issue. By its very nature, spread spectrum radio is much less susceptible to unwanted detection, monitoring or interference than either wires or narrow band radio. Wi-LAN's Hopper wireless modems include a number of added security features that virtually guarantee secure communications. Features such as pseudo-random spreading codes, customer-specified encryption, secret-access passwording, proprietary formating, and variable transmission flow make it almost impossible for unwanted listeners - even other Hopper users - to decipher your private communications.

Ease of Use

Hopper modems define 'plug-n-play' convenience. They are easy to install, easy to configure and easy to use. All the set-up tools are built in. No installation disks or software drivers are required. Simply connect your Hopper to any PC via the RS 232 serial port and apply power. Configuration can be completed in seconds using any standard communications program.
