With the use of Power over Ethernet (PoE) products, Axis network video products can receive both data and power over a single Ethernet cable.

The PoE products enable Axis network cameras and video servers to be installed in areas where traditional power cabling and outlets are unavailable or difficult to install. Power over Ethernet offers an easier, faster and more cost-effective solution than installing new power outlets and electrical cabling.

Features:

  • No need for power outlets - Network cameras and video servers can be located in places where traditional power cabling and outlets are unavailable or difficult to install.
  • Uninterrupted power supply - When using the Power over LAN Midspans together with uninterrupted power supply (UPS) devices, Axis' network cameras and video servers can continue to operate even when there is a power failure.
  • Low installation costs - Avoids the need for separate power and data cable infrastructure and costly AC outlets. No electrician is needed -- the IT department or IT reseller/installer can do the job.
  • IEEE 802.3af compliance - The Power over LAN Midspans and  PoE AF Active Splitter are IEEE 802.3af compliant, which ensures compatibility with future power over Ethernet products.
Power over LAN Midspans_1_0904Power over LAN Midspans (at left) are available in 1, 6 and 12-port versions. A Power over LAN Midspan uses the unused pairs in a standard Cat 5 network cable to supply power to Power over Ethernet-enabled products.

Power over Ethernet AF Active Splitter and Power over LAN Active Splitter (at right) separate data and power coming over a network cable. The active splitters enable Axis network video products that lack built-in support for Power over Ethernet to receive both power and data from a network connection.Power over LAN Active Splitter_1_0904

Application areas:

  • Transport terminals, airports, large retail stores, warehouses, shopping malls, casinos, at public places, government and security facilities, universities and schools - Use PoE for network camera installations in areas where it might be impractical or expensive to run electrical cables and install power outlets.
  • Companies monitoring critical premises or critical equipment - can use PoE and benefit from having uninterrupted power supply to Axis network cameras and video servers.

How does it work?

The following set up shows how a network camera can receive power over a network cable and can continue to function even when there is a power failure.

Axis offers two types of accessories that enable Axis network video products to receive power and data over an Ethernet connection:

Power over LAN Midspan:

The Power over LAN Midspan is connected in between the switch/hub and the Power over Ethernet-enabled products. It uses the unused pairs in a standard Cat 5 network cable to supply power to Power over Ethernet-enabled products that are up to 328 feet (100 meters) away.

An important feature is autodetection of Power over Ethernet-enabled (PoE) products. This means that power will only be delivered to products designed to accept power over the network and not to standard networked equipment such as desktop computer and laptops.

The Power over LAN Midspan can be connected to a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) device, which enables PoE-enabled devices, as well as non-PoE devices that use a Power over LAN Active Splitter, to continue to operate even when there is a power failure.

Power over Ethernet AF Active Splitter or Power over LAN Active Splitter:

An active splitter gives the Axis network video products that lack built-in support for Power over Ethernet, the ability to receive power over the network by splitting the data and power coming over the network cable. (With products that have built-in Power over Ethernet, an active splitter is not required.)

Notes:

  • The Power over LAN Active Splitter works only with the Power over LAN Midspan, which is connected to a standard switch/hub. The Power over LAN Active Splitter is not compatible with Power over Ethernet-enabled switches.
  • The Power over Ethernet AF Active Splitter is IEEE 802.3af compliant and can be used with the PoL Midspan or a PoE-enabled switch.
